In my more optimistic days I purchased a book called "Professional C++". I think I picked it up in 2006 before I picked up Stroustrup and of course well before I was ready to tackle anything at all!
I've been flipping through it and it actually looks really interesting. It covers using debuggers, input/output streams, and it has a ton of design guidance and a dozen or so "real life" examples of when to use stuff. I wish there was a book like this for C. There probably is but truth be told I've done a lot of literature searching and I haven't found anything like this yet.
